So I just saw another gay black man protesting and stating he was Pro-Life. Although he did make sense in terms of facilities performing abortions being placed in areas that had residents who are on the lower end of the socioeconomic spectrum he has forgotten about a couple of things.
1) AS MEN WE HAVE PRIVILEGE! A privilege to never have to become pregnant, be left to fend for ourselves and the growing baby inside of a womb, have to provide for that child and ALL of its needs, and most importantly bring that child into the world and be forced to keep the child and see the same cycle of oppression being insanely repeated or placing the child up for adoption and seeing the child work through the system having the possibility to be placed in an abusive home or worse being sent around through the system throughout adolescence only to be thrown into adulthood lacking social skills, a successful education (studies show that not every child makes it out a college grad), BUT most importantly NOT having a loving family that can always be relied on.
2) We have no right to dictate what someone should do with their bodies! The moment laws become more conservative and start dictating us not being able to be sexually active without the intention to procreate, not being able to masterbate, and the abolition of pornography to include strip clubs there would be riots in the streets and protests all the way up to the Supreme Court!
The reality is that folks of color and individuals in poverty have a lower health literacy then our white and richer counterparts, and are at risk of a long list of conditions, ailments, diseases, etc. Rather than slam individuals on their choices why don’t we work to create a society that is universally respectful of someone’s decision.
Not long ago gay folks were being left to die due to the AIDS epidemic and the rights extended to us now were not too long ago non-existent. Reagon and the government could give a shit about us. The majority of society didn’t give a damn about us! So we need to stop being so critical of others, their struggles, and difficult decisions they have to make and most importantly work to create a society that provides fair opportunities and healthier outcomes to all. We need a society that will work to ensure that there is no lower end of the socioeconomic spectrum and that folks having to make a decision such as abortion will have fair information given to them on the pros and cons. MOST IMPORTANTLY be able to have the ability to CHOOSE the route they want to go without bias or judgment.
